All of the quotes you reference as page 111 show up on page 118 in the edition of Captain Jesse's book at https://archive.org/details/beaubrummell00jessgoog/page/n8.BillWnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-11850875506552763802019-08-19T22:28:35.344+01:002019-08-19T22:28:35.344+01:00I wrote the first version of this post back in 201...I wrote the first version of this post back in 2012, before I started recording the sources of my quotes in my blog posts. Your comment prompted me to re-examine my sources. It is impossible to tell how many of these quotes and anecdotes really happened, but they were certainly being repeated within a few years of Brummell's death. Where these quotes/anecdotes appear in the novels of Georgette Heyer, they are a reflection on her good research as she was certainly not the first to quote them.Rachel Knowleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14058142939706153724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-45986955524469247072019-08-19T22:22:42.191+01:002019-08-19T22:22:42.191+01:00He was certainly eccentric but he also laughed at ...He was certainly eccentric but he also laughed at himself and delighted in the stir that his absurdities caused.Rachel Knowleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14058142939706153724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-79044978534407518872019-08-19T00:01:38.590+01:002019-08-19T00:01:38.590+01:00*sigh*

I cant see how he could have been a "douche bag" .......since an impudent douche bag .........appears to be a more modern creation. Perhaps he was a type that always existed and still does. He was the right one, with fine skills and available cash, at the right time to catch the attention and acceptance of a society ready to recognize male beauty and style , swagger and all. We wouldve called him in the age just passed a movie star. the impyouknowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05482627008474786335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-55238078322000810852016-05-16T18:40:48.496+01:002016-05-16T18:40:48.496+01:00he sounds really obnoxious............ a latter da...he sounds really obnoxious............ a latter day douche bag....Kaleem Rajahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14660201428667958690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-47067041238122552512014-02-15T20:09:36.647+00:002014-02-15T20:09:36.647+00:00Nonetheless, they gave him a reputation for saying...Nonetheless, they gave him a reputation for saying the unexpected. :)
Rachel Knowleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14058142939706153724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-31999983388426221752014-02-14T22:28:51.732+00:002014-02-14T22:28:51.732+00:00These are among the lamest excuses for witty bante...These are among the lamest excuses for witty banter I've ever seen. If I picture Mr. Darcy in Georgian attire.... nah. Nope. Nuh-huh.

And one more anecdote: When Brummell was living in dire penury in France, his only hope of regular income a diplomatic appointment requiring the king's signature, everybody assumed George would have to die before Brummell could be appointed. In one of his latest sovereign acts, George signed the document, and gave Brummell a few more years of security and position.

He was fat, but at the last, maybe George was a friend, too.
Grace Burroweshttp://graceburrowes.comnoreply@blogger.com
