Maria was probably the most competent of his 21 children ( her last stepmother was about her own age. Imagine having to call a contemporary Mother!) She was like Jane in never marrying but never had to worry about being really poor. It is odd, in a way, that she thought the General quite unconvincing because no gentleman would act in such a manner yet could write about gentlemen who acted as though they were not.Regencyresearcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10828749339318882968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-75558403159465758802016-06-05T18:59:56.075+01:002016-06-05T18:59:56.075+01:00Maria Edgeworth is not an author you can put in a ...Maria Edgeworth is not an author you can put in a box! She wrote fiction and non-fiction, for children and adults, both society novels and Irish historical fiction. O yes - and a few plays! Be fun to visit in costume. :)
I have really enjoyed reading Maria Edgeworths letters - so many wonderful comments about her contemporaries. It is a challenge to know which to include in her chapter in my book on Regency women.Rachel Knowleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14058142939706153724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-30900487725313491662016-05-31T18:16:49.844+01:002016-05-31T18:16:49.844+01:00Wonderful post, Rachel! What a shame that Jane Austen never knew that the author she respected admired her work!

And thanks for the steps photo :) I've never been to Lyme (shame on me!!) and never quite understood how Luisa could have been so clumsy. This rather explains it, makes her look quite brave to negotiate those steps in Regency attire :)Joana Starneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10150637735779894393noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196124033481143515.post-12115363364587613072016-05-27T14:20:41.708+01:002016-05-27T14:20:41.708+01:00This is so interesting. I understood she was a Gothic writer, which I guess the reference to her books in Northanger Abbey would suggest. I knew Austen liked Edgeworth but never knew if it was returned.

I would say, however, that Edgeworth missed a bit of Austen's goals in Northanger Abbey with the General. There's beautiful irony in the fact that Catherine's tale of adventure faces a villain that's not paranormal but his behavior is so out of the bounds of normal civility that he's practically other worldly, and yet, it is not impossible to believe a man might have such a foul temperament.

I've enjoyed your posts about Edgeworth's works, by the way. I mean to read them some day!Rose Fairbankshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01838173402965567451noreply@blogger.com
