Talk: Women on the Grand Tour
Women on the Grand Tour
The Grand Tour has a reputation for allowing young men to indulge their passions at a safe distance from home and parents.
But that’s just one side of the story. Men, and women, of all ages, took the opportunity to explore Europe and in particular, Italy.
These travels, and the ideas and artifacts brought home, helped shape the landscape of Regency England.
The tour was part holiday, part education, part escape and part social. It included encounters with rogues and radicals, dramatic journeys through high mountains and into unfamiliar lands, and a chance to meet a diverse selection of curious characters.
This talk is all about the women who went on the Tour. It tells some of the exciting stories from their Grand Tour experience, while showing how their travels influenced their lives, and those of others in the Regency world.
